There is nary a continent with a more rugged and nasty guitar rock lineage than Australia, and Eddy Current Suppression Ring are most certainly the current heirs to the throne built by such luminaries as The Saints, The Victims, X, and Radio Birdman. Their suburban sprawl, traffic congestion and bucolic fields probably aren't all that different from those in other industrialized countries, but something about that landscape and culture causes a sizeable share of young men to pick up guitars and crank out some of the rawest sounds on earth. Eddy and the boys have channeled that pan-seared guitar, tightened up the rhythm and yelped out some of the most fun, wild and catchy rock songs this decade has heard.
After a handful of singles and a stunning debut LP, ECSR have shown all sides: snarling, ragged punk anthems, melancholic slow-dances and silly sing-alongs, all coasting by with the efficiency of Teengenerate and the breezy cool of the Strokes (yes, the Strokes). It's not unusual to find yourself humming an Eddy Current song days later, as they manage to take what's classically simple and make it new, no small feat when working with the standard four-piece rock band setup.
Residents of the USA are being graced with the presence of these young gents in September 2007, during which time they will have a nice new 7" single to sell, courtesy of White Denim and new label Metropolitan Recluse. Ceilings and floors alike are under no warranty from said labels, as excessive pogoing to the record might damage.
